How to prepare for a sleep study?

Preparing for a Level 1 PSG (Polysomnography) sleep test involves specific steps to ensure result accuracy and enhance the comfort of the testing process. Level 1 PSG is an extensive sleep study that monitors various aspects of your sleep, including brain activity, heart rate, and breathing. Here are some guidelines to help you prepare:

  1. Inform your Sleep Technician about any prescription or over-the-counter medications you are currently taking, as some drugs may interfere with the test.
  2. Avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol intake in the days leading up to the test, as they can disrupt your sleep patterns. Refrain from consuming these substances on the test day.
  3. Shower and wash your hair before the test, but avoid using hair products like gels or sprays, as they can interfere with electrode placement. Remove makeup, and refrain from using lotions or creams on your face or body.
  4. Choose comfortable, loose-fitting clothing, such as pajamas, suitable for sleeping. Avoid tight or restrictive clothing.
  5. Ensure you are well-rested: Aim for a good night’s sleep the night before your PSG test, as being well-rested can help you fall asleep more easily during the test.
  6. Stick to your usual bedtime routine as much as possible. Bring items that help you relax, such as a book, music, or a favorite pillow.
  7. Try not to eat a large or heavy meal close to the time of the test, as this can cause discomfort while lying down. A light snack is acceptable if needed.
  8. Leave electronic devices, like smartphones and tablets, at home or hand them over to the Sleep Technician during your stay. Bring any personal items you need for the test, such as medications or a change of clothes for the following day.
  9. Be sure to inform the Sleep Technician of any medical conditions, allergies, or other relevant health information.
  10. Arrive at the appointed time to allow for setup and preparation. The test typically takes place at night and may require an overnight stay.
